Amongst a collection of negatives covering the scintillating topics of steel beams, concrete structures, and spur-dikes, there lies a gem unique from all others: a historical cartoon. Depicting the creation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, this cartoon mocks the flawed construction of this precariously leaning building. One engineer jokes to another, “I skimped a little on the foundation, but no one will ever know it!” However, its fate was
doomed from the very beginning, as it began to lean in the midst of construction. Having been built on an unstable foundation of mud, clay and sand, the structure settled unevenly and continues to tilt progressively each year. However, this incredible building has seemed to consistently defy the laws of gravity for hundreds and hundreds of years. Is the end in sight for this spectacle of great captivation? Only time will tell.
