Collection of Bridge Postcards

This collection contains a selection of postcards featuring bridges throughout the United States, Canada, China, and Scotland. With 86 postcards in all, the majority display scenes of American bridges. There is a significant number of postcards from California and New York with notable attention placed on the Golden Gate Bridge in particular. Postcards range from the 1910s to the 1970s and are either photographs or chromolithographs of a particular bridge, with one exception being a dam. All are printed in either black and white or color.

Collection of Negatives and Photographs of Fritz Engineering Laboratory Tests and Events

This collection is comprised of approximately 6,500 photographs and negatives depicting testing and related activities in the Fritz Engineering Laboratory on the campus of Lehigh University.  The bulk of the collection depicts testing conducted during the mid-to-late 1950s into the early 1960s.  Additionally, the collection includes graphs and diagrams of testing results, some images from Lab related events, and some images of structures that illustrate design elements or problems.  All materials are in black and white.

Willis A. Slater Papers, 1910-1937 

This collection is composed of the papers of Willis A. Slater, a Lehigh University civil engineering professor, chair of the department and director of Fritz Engineering Laboratory. The papers give insight into Slater’s professional career as a civil engineer, particularly his work with reinforced concrete. The items contained in this collection range from 1910 to 1937 and include reports, blueprints, diaries, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks. Of particular interest are Slater’s papers on the construction of the Stevenson Creek Dam.

Records of Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat

The collection is composed of records created and organized by Dr. Lynn S. Beedle, during his time as director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. It contains primarily subject files, correspondence, and audio and visual materials generated by the organization during the period of time it was headquartered at Lehigh University, as well as some of Beedle’s personal files.

Blair Birdsall Papers

The Blair Birdsall papers contains of civil engineering records of professional engineer Mr. Birdsall’s professional activities covering from 1950-2002. Birdsall was a civil engineer and was involved with design, built and repairs of famous bridges and other structures around the world. The collection includes notes, subject files, drawings, blueprints, publications, photographs, correspondence, business records and ephemera related to projects he worked on during his time at the companies such as Steinman and John Roebling.

John W. Fisher Papers

John W. Fisher, Professor Emeritus at Lehigh University, is renowned in the field of structural engineering for his work with steel connection design, specifically bolts, welding and fatigue.  He is also known for the founding of the ATLSS Facility on Lehigh University’s Mountaintop Campus that is used to test and observe the reactions of large structural systems.  The major portion of this collection is forensic investigations of fatigue and connection failure, other projects include independent research, rehabilitation projects and specification design.
